Privacy & data handling

What we collect

Browsing the directory itself does not require giving us anything. We only collect personal information when you submit one of two forms:

• The estimate form collects your name, email, phone, preferred contact method, city, trade, how many contractors may contact you, and a description of your project. We keep the consent you agreed to with the request, and when you sent it.
• The list-your-business form collects your business name, contact details, primary trade, and an optional notes field.

Estimate requests

When you send the estimate form, your project description and town are shared with Massachusetts contractors in that trade whose service area covers your town, without your name or contact details. Your name, phone number and email address go only to the ones who want the job, up to the number you chose, and they contact you directly by phone, text or email. You are under no obligation to answer any of them or to hire anyone.

Requests made on the town pages of our sister site, permits.llc, are handled the same way: the form on that site posts to this one. Which contractors can see a request is set out on the methodology page.

Booking a visit online

When you book an in-home estimate with a contractor online, your name, phone, email, the property address and your answers go to that contractor, and the visit is booked on their calendar through Cal.com, which sends your confirmation. Details you leave for a follow-up go to that contractor too. Nothing goes to any other contractor.

Before a quote request or a booking on this site goes in, we text your mobile number a 6-digit code to confirm the number is yours, and keep the number with what you agreed to and when. If you don’t go on to send the request or book the visit, we delete it within a week.

Contractor listings

Contractor business names, addresses, phone numbers, websites, and public review information appear in the directory. Contractor email addresses, where we have them, are used only to write to the contractor about homeowner requests and their listing, and are never displayed on the site.

Analytics & advertising

We use Google Analytics to count page visits and form submissions across the site. If you arrive from one of our ads in ChatGPT, OpenAI’s advertising pixel also loads on the page you land on and on the confirmation screen after you submit the estimate form. It tells OpenAI that the visit, and a request if you send one, came from its ad, so we can measure the campaign. For a request that started from one of those ads, we also tell OpenAI directly that the request was made, or that you booked a visit or left your details for a follow-up online. To match the request to the ad, OpenAI receives your email, phone number and name in hashed (scrambled) form, along with your town, IP address and browser type.

Our ads on Facebook and Instagram work the same way. If you arrive from one of them, Meta’s advertising pixel loads on the pages you visit and on the confirmation screen after you submit the estimate form. It tells Meta that the visit, and a request if you send one, came from its ad, so we can measure the campaign. For a request that started from one of those ads, we also tell Meta directly that the request was made, and later that it was confirmed. To match the request to the ad, Meta receives your email, phone number and name in hashed (scrambled) form, along with your town and state, IP address and browser type. If you did not arrive from one of our ads, neither OpenAI’s nor Meta’s pixel loads. None of these services receives your project description.

What we don’t do

We share your details only with the contractors you ask for quotes from or book a visit with. We never give them to anyone else, apart from the hashed (scrambled) form we use to measure our ads in ChatGPT and on Facebook and Instagram, described above. Among contractors, only the ones who want your job, up to the number you chose, or the contractors you book visits with get your name, phone number and email address. Apart from the hashed form described above, we do not give your contact details to advertisers, data brokers or other directories.
