A building permit is required in Massachusetts for any roof replacement, issued here by the Rehoboth Building Department. State code requires an ice-and-water shield at the eaves and valleys and proper drip edge and underlayment; in a wind-exposed rural town, correct shingle nailing patterns and starter-strip detailing matter just as much for storm resistance. On the town's older farmhouses and antique homes, tear-off often reveals plank decking or rot that needs repair before re-roofing. Licensed roofers usually pull the permit and schedule the required inspection.

A typical asphalt re-roof in Rehoboth runs roughly $9,500–$20,000 depending on size, pitch, and tear-off. Costs here sit a bit below the Boston-metro average but reflect southeastern-Massachusetts labor rates and the town's larger rural homes with long roof runs. Architectural shingles add a small premium over three-tab and offer better wind ratings — worth it given exposure. Metal and EPDM cost more. The usual surprises are plank-deck or rot repair on older farmhouses and full ice-and-water coverage that code requires regardless of roof age.

Massachusetts requires a written contract and a Home Improvement Contractor registration for most residential roofing work; ask for the registration number and check it before paying a deposit.
