Designers in Wellesley don't pull permits — the contractor does, through the Wellesley Building Department. Kitchen and bath remodels trigger building, plumbing, and electrical permits, with gas line work needing a separate gas permit. Most Wellesley homes built before 1940 still have remnants of original knob-and-tube wiring in unrenovated zones and may have undersized electrical service; a designer planning a kitchen, primary bath, or whole-floor scope will routinely coordinate rewiring and service upgrade with the GC at kickoff. Wellesley's local historic districts cover exterior changes only, so interior design work in Cliff Estates and Wellesley Hills historic-district homes proceeds without commission review.

Wellesley interior designer fees sit at the top of the Massachusetts market — comparable to Newton and Brookline, typically 30 to 45 percent above the state median. Hourly rates from established firms commonly run $215 to $475, with principal designers at top boutiques charging $525 to $800+. Flat-fee single-room scopes typically run $6,500 to $15,000. Kitchen-bath selection packages commonly land at $7,000 to $16,000. Whole-house engagements are usually priced at 15 to 25 percent of combined construction-and-furnishings budget; on a substantial Cliff Estates or Wellesley Hills restoration that figure can run well into six figures in design fees. Cost-plus procurement markups run 20 to 35 percent over trade.

Massachusetts requires a written contract and a Home Improvement Contractor registration for most residential interior design work; ask for the registration number and check it before paying a deposit.
