Eyles Contracting

The City of Fitchburg Building Department requires a permit for any window or door replacement that changes the opening size, structural framing, or egress configuration. Like-for-like full-frame replacements in the existing rough opening typically don't need a permit but must meet current egress code — relevant on older three-deckers where bedroom openings sometimes need to be enlarged. Properties in the Upper Common Historic District or Civic Center area may need additional Historical Commission review. Pre-1978 housing — most of the city — falls under federal lead-safe RRP rules, adding $50–$150 per opening for documented containment and disposal.

Window-and-door pricing in Fitchburg sits in the central-MA mid-tier — below Boston-metro rates and roughly in line with Leominster and Worcester. Standard vinyl full-frame replacements typically run $550–$1,000 per opening installed; mid-grade composite or wood-clad units run $1,300–$2,700 per opening. Entry door replacement is typically $1,900–$4,500 installed depending on material. Three-decker projects often price slightly below per-opening rate on volume but add staging and disposal cost for the lead-safe work.

Massachusetts requires a written contract and a Home Improvement Contractor registration for most residential window & door installation work; ask for the registration number and check it before paying a deposit.
