Hiring a HVAC contractor in Weymouth
The Town of Weymouth requires a building permit for HVAC system replacement through the Building Department, with a separate electrical permit for any new heat pump circuits. Standard permits typically clear in a few business days. Conservation Commission review may apply if outdoor equipment is sited within 100 feet of wetlands — relevant for parts of South Weymouth near Whitman's Pond and several smaller streams. Properties near the Fore River or Hingham Bay shoreline may also need review.
HVAC costs in Weymouth track the broader South Shore market — generally below Boston metro pricing. A like-for-like gas furnace replacement is typically $5,500–$9,000 installed; a single-zone ductless mini-split runs $4,000–$7,000; a whole-home cold-climate heat pump retrofit is typically $17,000–$28,000 before rebates. Adding central AC to a forced-hot-water (boiler + baseboard) home is more involved because ductwork has to be added from scratch, often pushing total project cost over $20,000.
Massachusetts requires a written contract and a Home Improvement Contractor registration for most residential hvac work; ask for the registration number and check it before paying a deposit.
