Is Canton in Mass Save?

Yes. Canton gets its electricity from Eversource, not from a municipal light plant, so homes in Canton are in the Mass Save program. Its natural gas comes from Eversource (the state's list), also a Mass Save sponsor.

Canton is not on the state's list of municipal light plants. Mass Save is not statewide: 41 light plants serve all or part of 50 municipalities, and homes on their electric service are outside its electric program (Mass Save in municipal light plant towns).

Rebates and financing for a new roof in Canton

Mass Save doesn't pay for the roof itself: its insulation and windows offers cover insulation, air sealing and windows, and roofing is not on the HEAT Loan's list of eligible measures.

The insulation can be covered: after a Home Energy Assessment, Mass Save pays 75 to 100 percent of approved insulation and air sealing in Canton. Attics are part of it, so book the assessment before the roof work starts.

Do you need a permit for a new roof in Canton?

Yes. Re-roofing is not exempt under the Massachusetts building code, so Canton expects a building permit, usually pulled by the contractor. 51% of Canton's homes were built before 1980 (Census ACS 2018-2022), and work that disturbs paint in a home built before 1978 has to follow the lead-safe renovation rules.

permits.llc carries the rules: its Massachusetts guide to the permit for a new roof and the Canton Building Department page, with the department's contact and portal. For a sense of volume, permits.llc counts 27 building permits filed in Canton in October 2025 through September 2026 (its count).
