AC Compressor Replacement Cost in Massachusetts

What does AC compressor replacement cost in Massachusetts? Check whether it is really the compressor, whether the system was registered for the longer parts warranty, and what that warranty leaves out: labor, refrigerant and failures from faulty installation. Plus older R-22 systems, when to consider replacing instead, and three questions to ask every contractor.

What to look for

  • Is it really the compressor? A failed capacitor can stop the compressor while the fan keeps running, so get the diagnosis in writing
  • Registration: Carrier, for example, gives ten years on parts if the system was registered within 90 days of installation, five years if not
  • What the parts warranty skips: labor, refrigerant and failures caused by faulty installation, so a covered part still comes with a labor bill
  • R-22 has not been produced or imported in the US since 2020, so older systems rely on stored supply
  • ENERGY STAR says to consider replacing a system more than ten years old, and that before rebates a heat pump costs about the same as central air
  • Two quotes for the same failed compressor are rarely for the same job, so price alone is the wrong comparison

How much does it cost to replace an AC compressor in Massachusetts? Your system may have a ten year parts warranty, and you can still get a real bill. Here is what sets the price.

One: is it really the compressor? A failed capacitor can stop the compressor while the fan runs. That part is cheap, so get the diagnosis in writing.

Two: registration. Carrier, for example, gives ten years on parts if the system was registered within 90 days of installation. Miss that, and it drops to five years.

Three: what the warranty skips. The same warranty excludes labor, refrigerant, and failures caused by faulty installation. A compressor swap means recovering the refrigerant, brazing in the new compressor, a new drier, a vacuum and a recharge. So a covered part still means a labor bill.

Four: refrigerant and age. R-22 has not been produced or imported in the US since 2020, so older systems rely on stored supply. ENERGY STAR says to consider replacing a system more than ten years old, and notes that before rebates, a heat pump costs about the same as central air. In Massachusetts, it heats your home too.

So when two quotes for the same failed compressor are far apart, they are rarely the same job. One may be a part swap with no labor warranty. The other may include a new drier, a vacuum test and a warranty on the repair. Price alone is the wrong comparison, especially in a Massachusetts climate.

Ask every contractor three questions. Is it the compressor or the capacitor? Is my system registered, and what does the warranty cover? And what warranty do you give on your labor?
