Watertown requires a permit for HVAC system replacement, processed through the town's Inspectional Services Department, with a separate electrical permit for any new heat pump circuits. Condo conversions and multi-family installs sometimes need additional sign-off from the condo association before permits go in. Inspections are usually quick, but parking and staging in dense Watertown Square and East Watertown neighborhoods can drive scheduling — most installers will pull the permit and confirm a delivery window once the equipment is ready.

Watertown costs sit in the upper Boston metro range, driven by labor rates and access constraints in older buildings. A single-zone ductless mini-split typically runs $4,500–$8,000 installed, multi-zone ductless systems for a triple-decker unit fall in the $12,000–$22,000 range, and a like-for-like gas boiler swap runs roughly $7,500–$12,500. Full whole-home heat pump retrofits in a single-family are usually $22,000–$35,000 before rebates; triple-deckers running them across all three floors push higher.

Massachusetts requires a written contract and a Home Improvement Contractor registration for most residential hvac work; ask for the registration number and check it before paying a deposit.
