Endless Energy

Massachusetts requires a permit for any HVAC system replacement, reviewed by the Randolph building department. A heat pump retrofit also needs a separate electrical permit for the new condenser circuits, pulled by a licensed electrician. Many of Randolph's post-war homes have older electrical panels that need an upgrade to carry a heat pump load, coordinated through National Grid. On the town's denser, smaller lots, contractors also factor in setback and noise considerations when siting outdoor units. Established installers handle both permits as part of the job.

Randolph project costs sit in the typical inner-South-Shore range. A full whole-home heat pump retrofit generally runs $18,000–$30,000 before rebates; a single-zone ductless mini-split usually lands at $4,500–$8,000 installed; and a like-for-like gas or oil boiler replacement is typically $7,500–$13,000. Compact post-war homes with simple layouts can come in toward the lower end, while houses needing electrical service upgrades or careful condenser placement on tight lots push toward the higher end of each range.

Massachusetts requires a written contract and a Home Improvement Contractor registration for most residential hvac work; ask for the registration number and check it before paying a deposit.
